Newark Tech has been recognized once again by U.S. News and World Report Magazine as one of the Top High School in the Nation. We received the Title One Distinguished Schools Award for closing the achievement gap for the effective use of data in 2007 through 2014. Newark Tech has also attained Adequate Yearly Progress for the past seven years. Newark Tech, located at 91 West Market Street in Newark, NJ provides the students of Essex County with an array of alternatives to the general courses offered by their district school. A rigorous academic schedule requires the general student to take four years of Mathematics, a minimum of three years of Science, four years of English and Physical Education and three years of Social Studies. Our Academy and Tech Prep Program enhances the general track by including a total of four years of Science and four years of Mathematics, culminating with Physics, Forensic Science, Pre-Calculus, Calculus and Spanish. This sequence of study permits the student to pursue a baccalaureate or associate degree and provides a strong comprehensive link between Newark Tech and post-secondary educational institutions.
Our school employs a nine period day schedule. Using nine periods allow instructors to teach fewer students. Our daily schedule is combined with the following career technical education field of study: Engineering/Robotics, Certified Nursing Assistant, Automotive Technology, Manufacturing and Welding. Our Career Technical Education (C.T.E) classes such as our Health Careers Academy (Pre-Med program), Computer-Aided Drafting (C.A.D), Electronics and Computer Repair, Engineering, Business Technology, Medical Assistant, E.M.T. and Combine Engineering provide Newark Tech students with an opportunity to commence college life and/or enter directly into the job market. Students at Newark Tech are evaluated through a Competency-Based Education approach. Demonstration of specified skill competencies and the use of project task sheets enable the students to attain not only a high school diploma, but also a certificate listing areas of mastery.
Newark Tech has the following three major levels of academic programs: the Vocational-Technical Program, the Tech Prep Program and the Academy Program. Our Tech Prep and Academy students are students who aspire to attend college, and they take college preparation courses such as Algebra I and II, Geometry, Trigonometry, Pre-Calculus, Calculus, AP Calculus, AP English, AP History, AP Spanish, Physics, Chemistry and Biology. In addition, they are required to take at least two years of a foreign language. Additionally, Newark Tech offers an ESL (English as a Second Language) Program for students whose native language is not English. As a result of its rigorous academic program and strong emphasis on exemplary student performance, Newark Tech has made tremendous progress in achieving its state academic goals as measured by state standardized assessments and continuing to increase S.A.T/A.C.T scores amongst the student body.
In addition to the rigor and challenge of our academic and technical programs, Newark Tech has a variety of extra-curricular and character education programs which include our Debate Team, Drama Club, Chess Club, Skills USA, FBLA, HOSA, Fashion Club, Yearbook Club, Student Council, Senior Class Officers, National Honor Society, Cheerleaders and our JV and Varsity Athletic Program. Finally, in conjunction with the University of Medicine and Dentistry (Rutgers) located in Newark, New Jersey, Newark Tech provides a social services program called Teen Networking to its students in the areas of general counseling and conflict mediation activities.
