The National Honor Society is an organization that is committed to both educational excellence and service to our local community. Students are selected for admission to NHS based on maintaining a GPA of 3.6 or higher as well as the leadership characteristics they display in the classroom.
Traditionally, the National Honor Society is responsible for enhancing school pride and service within Newark’s community. Over the past few years, NHS members have volunteered in soup kitchens, at homeless shelters, and at youth group homes. Likewise, NHS members have enhanced the quality of our school community by hosting events to increase school spirit. Some of these events include our annual Cupid’s Love Dance, Cougars Got Talent Show, and the 80’s Roller Skating Party at Branch Brook Park. Activities such as these allow NHS members to utilize their leadership skills for the greater good and to make a difference in our community.
The National Honor Society also offers tutoring services to students who are struggling in class. The overall goal of this program is to enhance the academic achievement of our students through the use of peer tutoring.
If you would like to sign one of your students up for these services, please fill out the form provided on the attached link.
Not only does NHS provide its members with the opportunity to assist their peers, it also offers members the opportunity to grow academically and emotionally. Last year, five of our NHS members had the chance to travel to England and France on an educational tour. This once in a lifetime opportunity allowed our students to grow as young adults. During their travels, students were able to meet new people, experience new cultures and learn a great deal about a world outside of New Jersey. It is our ultimate hope to provide future NHS members with the same wonderful life experiences.
Students participating in the National Honor Society display the four pillars of the National Honor Society: scholarship, leadership, service, and character. It is our ultimate goal to enhance the lives of others by serving our local and school communities.
